Torrini Trademark

In 1369, Florence decided to take a census of every production activity, establishing that each artisan had to create and deposit their trademark. So Jacopus created and deposited in Florence the current Torrini trademark, which for over 650 years has been placed in every jewel craft by our goldsmith family.

The recording of Jacopus which took place in 1369 is stillvisible in the State Archives of Florence.

Scarperia,
the New Land

Nel 1369, Firenze decise di censire ogni attività produttiva stabilendo che ogni artigiano doveva creare e registrare il proprio trademark.

Bernardo, the progenitor of the Torrini dynasty, father of Jacopus and Tura, comes from a place called Battiloro near Florence, known for working noble metals.

In 1306, the Florentine Republic granted a ten-year exemption from taxes and any feudal servitude bond to those who would have transferred their work to Scarperia. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Jacopus, with his father Bernardo, moved to Scarperia and opened his shop.

Nel 1369, Firenze decise di censire ogni attività produttiva stabilendo che ogni artigiano doveva creare e registrare il proprio trademark.

Bernardo's sons are excellent in metalworking, they are required for commissions, and their fame spread even outside the Florentine Republic. Since the early fourteenth century, Tura collaborated with his art to construct the Siena's Cathedral.

Siena, in those years from Ghibellina, becomes Guelph. In power, there is an oligarchy made up of merchants and bankers called "The Nine".

The Trademark

Nel 1369, Firenze decise di censire ogni attività produttiva stabilendo che ogni artigiano doveva creare e registrare il proprio trademark.

Jacopus' workshop production was luxurious because it was aimed exclusively at the nobles; Scarperia would then become famous for producing blades.  Artisans of this type were among the most sought after because their creations ensured the defense.

In 1369, the Republic of Florence required artisans to register their trademark with one of the Florentine guilds. For this reason, our ancestor Jacopus registered his trademark at the Armorers and Blacksmiths' Art.

Turino di Sano was a goldsmith, coiner, and sculptor; he is our longest-lived ancestor of which we can admire a work. The statue of St. John the Baptist placed at the top of the dome of the Baptistery of Pisa is his most important work, certainly demanding, considering the technology of the time.

The Elders, the Pisan government, forced the artist to take out a loan of fifty gold florins to ensure that the work ended on time. In 1395, Turino finished making the statue and received one hundred and sixty Florins for this work, a significant figure for those times.

Giovanni Turini

Giovanni Turini was the most vital artistic personality of the family workshop because he knew and practiced all the arts with great versatility. He became the most representative figure of Sienese goldsmithing in the first half of the fifteenth century, as Vasari recalls in his commentary on "Vita del Pollajuolo".

In the workshop of Turino, his children carry out all the goldsmith techniques with great skill. Giovanni became a significant figure in the Sienese goldsmith art for about a century, holding the prestigious, together with other members of the House, the office of Prior 28 times, and acquiring the title of "Nobles of Siena".

Homecoming

During the Wars of Italy between Spain and France, the Republic of Siena was involved in the conflict that saw the two powers contend for supremacy over Italy. During this period, the Turini fled from Siena and returned to their homeland near Florence. They reunited with the family stock, transforming the patronymic surname Turini into Torrini, precisely as we know it today.

In 1600, a branch of the family moved to Umbria, while some documents give us historical certainty that the family stock continued the business in Mugello and Florence.

Francesco Torrini

On November 13, 1700, Francesco Torrini enrolled in the noblest guild of Florence, "Art of Silk", also known as Porta Rossa. His jewelry was on Ponte Vecchio, where he masterfully made and sold beautiful jewels that we can admire today. Francesco's most iconic work is a chiseled silver jug embellished with a dense Florentine-style decoration and an elegant iconography linked to the sea.
